Stock Car HIDs:  What You Should Know

High Intensity Discharge headlights, also known popularly as HIDs, have become extraordinarily commonplace in the past decade on major passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs.  As such, many owners of other types of vehicles (ATVs, go karts, etc.) have begun attempting to install HID lights on their own contraptions, motivated to provide their non-passenger vehicles with the same lighting impact that HIDs provide more traditional cars and trucks.  Stock cars, in all of their niche glory, fit this bill, and installing HIDs on a stock car is certainly more common than installing one on a go kart.  However, you’ll need to keep certain things in mind before deciding to install, so we’ll go through those factors below.

Replacing the Stock Car’s Original Headlights

Switching out the stock bulbs with the HID ones isn’t as simple as it looks (but then again, few things are simple with stock cars).  Aftermarket HIDs are generally designed to work on specific makes and models of vehicles, to if you select a package designed for a certain car and want to use it on your stock car, you’ll have to adapt the kit to make it work.  This may void any warranty on certain headlight parts, but the resulting increased brightness and custom color options available may make this worth it.  Just keep in mind, if you’re not technically savvy, that this will involve some major rewiring, use of harness adaptors, and more.  If you can’t handle the installation process yourself, you may want to have someone who’s skilled with both stock cars and HID lights help you out.

Rules and Regulations

If you race at a local stock car track, keep in mind that there may be specific rules and regulations that permit only certain headlight types.  Check on those guidelines before beginning installation, as HID lights that have to be adapted to stock car racer configurations are difficult to install, which would mean uninstalling them could be just as tough.

Brand your Stock Car

Branding is often an important part of stock car racing, whether you’re representing yourself or someone else.  Sometimes, this is carried through with a specific color scheme.  With HID lights, you can select the color you want the headlight display to be.  If you have a purple stock car, you can get purple stock car HID headlights to match.  If you want to go for opposites, try pairing an orange stock car with blue HIDs.  There are many different color temperatures to choose from, each designed to emit a different color, so you won’t have to worry about not having enough choices.
